In May of 1778, the British commander, General Clinton in Philadelphia, faced with a war with France decided it was prudent to protect New York City and Florida by sea. Then on June 18, the British began to evacuate Philadelphia, crossing New Jersey to go to New York City. The two commanders were, Sir Henry Clinton and George Washington. Great Britain killed 289 Americans while the U.S. Army killed 400. There was 40 wounded Americans and 641 wounded people from Britain. Great Britain captured 60 Americans but the Americans only captured 22 people from Britain. There were 11,00 U.S. troops and 14,500 British troops. Though there was no clear winner, the Americans got the win. The Battle of Monmouth was an important American Revolutionary War battle. It was here that the Americans intercepted the British forces  who were trekking from Philadelphia.
